Designer of the Month

Newcastle based designer & creator of
NEWCASTLE PRODUCTIONS
Shop Handmade’s Designer of the Month!

When did you know you wanted to be an illustrator?
I've always drawn, and have been working as a
fashion print designer for the past 25 years. I started
drawing cities in my current style about four years ago.
I'd moved to Australia from London a few years before that,
but I had started to feel homesick and wanted to draw my
environment as a way of getting out of the house and
connecting with Australia.  It's turned into my main job now.

How would you describe your design style?
I keep the quality of hand drawing in the work and
don't worry if my lines and perspective aren't perfect.
Most of my drawings focus on one subject,
like a street sign, building or park bench. I try to make
all my subjects iconic however mundane they seem.

What creative people, things or materials inspire your designs?
My drawings were initially influenced by graphic
artists like Robert Crumb and Evan Hecox.
I love drawing with Rotring Tikky graphic pens or old
fashioned pen and ink. I colour the drawings in
photoshop using a drawing tablet. My biggest
inspiration is my surroundings - I'm looking for
subjects and compositions all the time and my
view of the world is very different now
that I'm drawing so much.

How does a typical day of work for you go?
Every day is different. I might be designing for clothing
companies, printing and packing tea towels and cards,
packing boxes to post to Canberra, drawing and colouring
new pictures, or recently I have been going to Sydney
to find and photograph new things to draw. I prefer
to draw in a sketchbook on site , but often have
to draw from photographs for convenience.

What is your process when creating a new design?
My products are basically a vehicle for my drawings.
My Typography is hand drawn to keep the overall hand
made feel and I have the same format for every tea towel
which is basically a border that I place images within,
I like the branded look that this gives the work.
With the tea towels I choose subjects that vary between what
I would hope is commercial and what would interesting to see
in the range. I can usually tell what would be more popular based
on greeting card sales. Sometimes I just want to try something out.
Like the "I heart Canberra" tea towel that used Phar Lap's heart.
A very Canberra subject that hasn't been too popular with
tea towel buyers who might not want a horse's heart
in their kitchen. I like to take these things to finished products
so that I can move on to the next idea.

What would you like people to enjoy most about your designs?
I want people to look again at the subjects I draw,
to appreciate the humour and details of their surroundings.
I like drawing Canberra because something about it makes me
nostalgic for a past that I never knew. I see aspects of a utopian
50's, 60's and 70's all preserved so perfectly. I think the
city isn't appreciated fully because it's still so relatively new,
but that will change. My favourite drawings are of things that
resonate with people, like the 1975 bus shelters, the Starlight sign
or the Olympic Pool Diving Tower. These subjects represent
years of memories to many people, and aren't usually
considered as drawing subjects. I think that's one
of the reasons they are appreciated.

What makes your designs unique?
Not coming from Australia gives me a fresh eye when
it comes to selecting what to draw. I'm interested in
drawing things that are different to my memories of Britain.
Choosing Subject matter from an outsider's point of view means
I'm selecting very Australian subjects without getting too obvious.
I once decided to draw 100 Newcastle letterboxes purely because
that kind of letterbox doesn't exist in England, and that was
enough to make the project interesting to me.

What is your advice to aspiring designers?
Work hard.

What products do you currently stock at Shop?
Digital Prints, greeting cards, fridge magnets, zines and tea towels.
The tea towels are my favourite product, they are hand
screen printed by me and look great stretched on a frame.
They also look great with coffee stains and a hole burned in them.

Guest Post: Look Mama

Mother’s Day Memories…

Hey kids, it’s almost Mother’s Day, that day where mums
of little kids everywhere pretend that what they love
most in the world is a teabag stuck to a piece of
scribbled on paper. Or each of their fingernails painted
a different colour. Except guess what kids? I wasn’t
pretending, it was totally gorgeous and I wore my
multicoloured fingernails for a week. Pretty sure I didn’t
make the tea since I saw the making of the tea card, the
dropping of the teabag, and the ‘squashing it on
really well’ with preschoolers hands.

My brother and I grew up not buying actual presents on
Mother’s Day but one year my brother and I begged mum
for some money to get her something extra special. We
shopped separately, wrapped our gifts secretly, handed
them over with pride. We both managed to buy exactly the
same thing from the local corner shop! We both bought a
box of jelly jubes that looked like slices of fruit.

There must have been something about them to
outweigh the desire to get her a good old family block
of Cadbury. All I can say is, they looked really good in their
shiny black box, all glittery with sugar and obviously delicious.

About 20 years later I mentioned it to mum and she said
“You know what? I hate those things”. She did a lovely
job of hiding it, as we never guessed. Imagine her joy at
opening the second present to find it was exactly the same thing!

She was clever, because she wasn’t “over the top enthusiastic”
I think there might have been an “Oh loook, would you like one?”
A bigger show would have led to her getting a box of them
every year, forever. That woman has smarts.

Now we cook a breakfast or dinner and generally just hang
out and have a nice time. I’ll make her a cup of tea - my kids
have learned how to make scones - how perfect is that?
Maybe we’ll crack open the nail polish collection, you know,
for old times sake.

Whatever you do, however you celebrate it,
I hope you have a lovely time with your mum this Mother’s Day.

Now, cup of tea anyone?

Thank you to local gal Look Mama
